UX High Level Plan

Background: *The SharePoint Dev Wiki site is migrating to SharePoint 2010;  The purpose of the site is to be an active and credible  “repository of SharePoint community knowledge”.*

(WHAT) The Goal (s)

  • Migrate SharePoint Dev Wiki to SharePoint 2010 platform
  • Leverage SharePoint 2010 features to support user and site strategy.
  • Improve User Interface/User Experience by
    • understanding audience and
    • Improving visual presentation
    • Implementing appropriate features (i.e. rewards for contributing functionality. )
  • Provide a transparent view of a UX Design Project, illustrating successes and failures encountered along the way.
  • Manage collaborative project process information on SharePoint 2010 platform

(WHY) The Supporting PainPoints

  • Majority of articles and wiki pages are updated by the same people – This can lead to biased information
  • High volume of traffic results in surprisingly low user memberships and even lower contributors.  The metrics tell us something is wrong.  Users make it to the site to find answers but don’t complete the “conversion” of becoming wiki contributors
  • Wiki site exists in another wiki application and current markup will not work in SharePoint 2010
  • There are not enough good examples of 2010 SharePoint Wiki sites out there
  • User Experience is often misunderstood, especially on the SharePoint platform

(WHEN) Target Launch

  • End of April/early May

(WHO) Jeremy Thake and Marcy Kellar

  • We understand your pain and we love SharePoint

(HOW) The Solution

  • Employ UX Methodology to redesign user experience and improved functionality
  • use managed metadata to provide small taxonomy for navigating content
  • provide transparent blog entries to educate users on UX and the benefits

**Additional information on approach to be provided at a later date.

THE METRICS

The metrics will determine whether the design is a success. These are a:

  • Content production
  • Distribution of authored content
  • “conversions” of anonymous users to wiki contributors
  • length of time user is on site
  • “bounces” Rate
  • Qualitative interviews with users > more positive encounters
  • Fewer errors

I had the wiki completely open to anonymous but some people took advantage of this and started to post spam posts

You are correct, if you are registered and logged in, you will see the edit button.

My thoughts on "not wanting to register" is that if they can't be bothered to register in 30 secs to submit some content that probably will take 2 mins to think about, then I'm not sure we should be that worried. To mitigate this, I am actually going to use Open ID or maybe Live ID Authentication on the SharePoint 2010 platform, neither of which are quite released yet though.

      Thanks for your feedback.

Open ID support would be great and I understand this will fall under Claims Based Authentication Support promised for RTM in April.

Congratulations, Jeremy on providing a successful wiki platform for SharePoint Reference and I look forward to the conversion to 2010!

Thank you for your feedback.  I would love to see more feedback to incorporate into the overall design strategy.  We are definitely looking at wiki's that already work and are usable.  Keep comments coming.  Thank you!

Here's my first "user feedback" to myself.  I've signed up three times with the same username.  And yet my comment was anonymous.  I tried to get my password mailed to me and was told that there was no such email address.  So I signed up a fourth time.  Note to UX Redesign team... make sure login process smooth.

I would have bailed if I wasn't part of the redesign.
